AP-701 - My strokes aren't fully recorded and unreadable

Question

After having written with my AP-701, half my rendered strokes are missing. Why?

Answer

With the launch of our cheapest pen to date, we have encountered some challenges along the way but have overcome them all - and we thank you for bearing with us through this!

The issues were:

  • partial missing strokes (the pen writes correctly on paper and there is no indication that the pen is not recording strokes correctly but when the rendered image of the stroke data is viewed, you'll be able to see that sections of a stroke may be missing)   Resolved!
  • 'ghost' strokes (the pen writes correctly on paper and there is no indication that the pen is not recording strokes correctly but when the rendered image of the stroke data is viewed, you'll be able to see that lines connect the points of a penUp and penDown, i.e. between words/letters where the pen has been lifted from the patterned form and placed down again to continue writing)  Resolved!

The root causes of these impossibly complex issues  (above) have been identified and Anoto has taken steps towards drastically mitigating the impact of these. We have tightened up existing processes and even went as far as replacing some of the hardware components with more expensive, improved versions whilst still keeping the pen's price unchanged. None of these issues should be experienced anymore on...

  • AP-701 pens mass produced after August 2019
  • AP-701 pens that were manually reworked since May 2019

As a gesture of goodwill, Anoto is (and have been) placing a full 1 year hardware license (to be activated upon 1st penDown on Anoto pattern again) on all repaired/replaced AP-701 pens that were produced before September 2019 and display any of the above issues (unless your defective pen had a 'lifetime' license present, in which case your replacement pen will have the same 'lifetime' license too).

If your AP-701 pen is displaying any of the issues above, please raise an RMA request with our Support-team at your earliest convenience.
